“Hello, hello,” Musa said quietly. He turned to Anthony and smiled. “Pretend we’re having a conversation while you cut the melon. Look behind me. What do you see?”

Anthony returned the smile and looked over Musa’s shoulder. “A big, bald man in a grey tunic with a sword belt is talking to a bunch of men at the side of the swimming pool. They all look tough, maybe military – no not military. Ah, another man also with a sword. He’s military, I’d say. He’s talking with the bald man and waving at the swimmers.”

He passed Musa a slice of melon.

“Tall, maybe thirty with a long narrow nose?”

Anthony nodded. “That’s the military fellow.”

“The Centurion. Wake your mate. We’ve got to leave now.”

Anthony shook Davos awake. He yawned and blinked at him. “What’s up? I’m hungry.”

Anthony handed him a slice of melon.

“Follow me, and walk slow,” said Musa.

“What about the slaves?” Davos asked. “And our clothes.”

Musa ignored him. He led the way through a succession of chambers, along a back corridor and out through an archway into a court lined with shops and crowded with semi-naked men with green neck cloths.

“Look,” said Davos. “That’s where we had had our hair cut.”

Musa gave him a look that silenced him, and they crossed the court.

The barber heaved at a pair of tall shutters. “Oh, hello, boys. Give me a hand, will you? I’m closing early. The Greens won the races again, so it’ll be crazy tonight.”

Musa pulled him back inside the shop, and Anthony and Davos followed. “We need clothes: slave tunics and collars for the boys, something dark for me and sandals.”

“But, Musa, my dear—”

Musa held up a gold coin. “It’s for the Cause.”
